Answers

Does Fretboard IQ support defining your own scales, chords, arpeggios and intervals?

Yes, Fretboard IQ has an easy to use interface for creating your own chords and scales. You simply create a new item on the scale/chord/interval manager screen by selecting the new button, then click on the scale degrees you wish to include that define the item and save. Fretboard IQ without knowing what the item is will figure out how to display it across as many frets as you want, in all 5 positions or in combination with any other scale or chord.

Is there a maximum number of selections that I can put on the fretboard at one time?

Yes, the current maximum is 6 selections at the same time but in most instances you'll probably be looking at the relationship between two items, like a particular chord and a particular scale. The more items you put on the fretboard the more confused the diagram will become.

What instruments are currently supported for diagramming?

Currently the guitar, bass, double bass, viola, cello and violin are all supported. You can even create diagrams on a violin screen and then check them out on a guitar screen or vice versa.

Can I save my diagrams?

Yes, saving diagrams and all associated options that you chose to create the diagram is completely supported. When you save a diagram its name goes into the Configuration List. If you want to see it again all you need to do is select it from that list and there it is.

Can I print my diagrams?

Yes, printing is no problem. You can print out any diagram you create and then carry it with you for study away from the computer at your convenience.

What is a configuration?

A configuration is simply how Fretboard IQ refers to a particular fretboard diagram and all its associated options, like fret count, tuning, selections, string filters. Basically all the options that went into creating the unique fretboard diagram can be saved as a configuration for viewing later simply by selecting the configuration from the configuration list. You can name the diagrams anything you want as well as add comments about why the diagram is of interest.

I'm a college student majoring in music. How could Fretboard IQ help me?

Even if you don't play any of the instruments that Fretboard IQ is capable of creating diagrams for, the theory tutorials and drill screens would still apply to you. Fretboard IQ does not hold back with baby questions or watered down theory, some of the drill screens will take a while to master. For example, the intervals drill is one of 12 drill screens available under the music theory category within Fretboard IQ. The intervals drill is completely configurable by you, in other words you can control which intervals you'd like to be drilled on and Fretboard IQ will only ask questions for those intervals. If you are just getting started with intervals you'd want to keep the default setting of major scale intervals and as you progress you can concentrate on various other interval groups like 9th's, 11th's, 13th's, minor, major, augmented, diminished etc... The point is you are in the drivers seat so you can work on the areas that apply to you at the moment. The level of theoretical knowledge to be gained through Fretboard IQ is at least the first year college level. A thorough knowledge of the basics is what we are striving to give you through the theory tutorials.

How is Fretboard IQ different from any other theory teaching program?

Each theory topic covered in Fretboard IQ is presented in what we call a discovery and drill screen pair. The discovery screen introduces the topic and takes you through a tutorial if applicable and the drill screen helps you really master the material. You are not left hanging with just knowledge alone. By the time you can blaze a trail through the drill screen questions you will know the topic inside and out. The drill screens are ultimately the judge of whether you understand the material or not. You don't have to wonder, "Do I really know my major scales well enough?". Just go through the drill, if you get more than a couple of questions wrong then you have some more work to do. If not then go on to the next topic with confidence.

What are the visualization screens?

The visualization screens are really awesome in our opinion. They might not be much to look at, just a diagram of a guitar fretboard with a colored circle and question mark and a question at the bottom of the screen, but these 14 screens are designed to have you knowing the fretboard like the back of your hand in record time. No kidding. Have you ever tried to sit and memorize the names of the notes of the fretboard? We have and it's boring. Learning the fretboard is actually like a playing a game with Fretboard IQ. We have 14 different screens in this category that will have you seeing the fretboard like a pro in no time. There's one screen devoted to each major key, one devoted to learning the natural notes, and another we call visualizing by string.
